A map of Lovecraft Country

The Miskatonic Valley as the stories describe it — drawn fresh for this archive, owing nothing to anyone's game supplements. Drag to pan, scroll to zoom, and touch a marker to open its file: what the place is, which stories put it there, two hooks for your table, and the sound of standing in it. The full written index follows below the chart for those who prefer prose to pins.

The location index

Town · on the Miskatonic

Arkham

The witch-haunted college town at the center of everything — gambrel roofs, elm-shadowed streets, and a citizenry practiced at not discussing what the Miskatonic brings downstream. Every road on this map eventually leads here, and every survivor eventually testifies here.

Cited in The Dreams in the Witch House · The Thing on the Doorstep · Herbert West—Reanimator

Hooks

  • A witch-house attic room is re-let after a century sealed; the new tenant's geometry homework starts solving itself.
  • The historical society acquires a colonial diary that names living residents.

Institution · Arkham

Miskatonic University

New England's quietest famous university, whose library keeps a Latin Necronomicon behind iron and whose faculty have twice saved the world without tenure recognizing it. The Restricted Section is consulted by appointment, refused by instinct.

Cited in The Dunwich Horror · At the Mountains of Madness · The Shadow Out of Time

Hooks

  • A visiting scholar's letters of introduction are perfect — and typed on a machine whose typeface died in 1820.
  • The library's call slips for one shelf mark keep going missing, in order.

Institution · Arkham outskirts

Arkham Sanitarium

The archive's home ground. Ward C houses the patients who stopped being wrong — the ones whose statements match each other across decades without ever having met. Patient 1928-XIII transcribes what the deep hums; the recordings you are listening to are filed as his.

Cited in The Thing on the Doorstep · the frame of this whole catalog

Hooks

  • Two patients admitted twenty years apart draw the same spiral, signed with the same initials.
  • A discharged patient's family reports him improved, changed, and left-handed now.

Town · the coast

Kingsport

A steep old harbor town of crooked lanes and sea-fog, beautiful enough that visitors forget to ask why the highest house on the crag keeps its lights burning for no listed resident. Kingsport dreams more than it fishes.

Cited in The Festival · The Strange High House in the Mist

Hooks

  • An investigator inherits an invitation — not a house, an invitation — to the festival held every hundred years.
  • The fog comes in on schedule; one morning it goes out with something's tracks in it.

Nearby

  • Arkham · the open Atlantic

Town · the Manuxet mouth

Innsmouth

The shunned port. Half-empty since 1846, raided by the government in 1928, and still — officially — a customs anomaly. The Esoteric Order of Dagon holds the old Masonic hall, the gold refinery works odd hours, and the bus to Arkham runs mostly empty in one direction.

Cited in The Shadow over Innsmouth

Hooks

  • The refinery quietly reopens under new ownership with old faces.
  • A genealogy service refunds an investigator's fee with a note: "Do not pursue."

Nearby

  • Devil Reef · Y'ha-nthlei · the salt marshes

Sea mark · offshore Innsmouth

Devil Reef

A black line of rock a mile and a half out, barely above water at high tide — and, at certain moons, above it in company. Obed Marsh's bargains were struck here, and the depth charges of 1928 did not reach what keeps the appointments now.

Cited in The Shadow over Innsmouth

Hooks

  • A salvage crew wins the wreck rights at auction, cheap.
  • The new lighthouse keeper's log is meticulous, until the entries begin answering him.

The sound of this place

Nearby

  • Innsmouth · Y'ha-nthlei below

City · beneath the Atlantic

Y'ha-nthlei

The many-columned city under the deep beyond the reef — cyclopean, phosphorescent, and patient. Its people do not die, and its ledgers are kept in tribute and blood. Marked on this chart in the only sense that matters: it is exactly where it has always been.

Cited in The Shadow over Innsmouth · Dagon

Hooks

  • Something asks, through an intermediary with too few blinks, to buy back an item raised by trawler.
  • An investigator with the wrong grandmother starts dreaming in architecture.

Village · the upper Miskatonic

Dunwich

A decayed huddle of farms in a fold of the round hills, where the whippoorwills time their calls to the dying and stone circles crown the summits. The Whateley name is spoken the way one prods a bruise. Since 1928 the village signposts have been removed — by the county, officially.

Cited in The Dunwich Horror

Hooks

  • A land agent is buying the farms around Sentinel Hill for a client who signs in an unreadable hand.
  • The whippoorwills have started gathering at one particular house, in daylight.

The sound of this place

Nearby

  • Sentinel Hill · Cold Spring Glen · Aylesbury

Summit · above Dunwich

Sentinel Hill

The bald summit ringed with standing stones, table-topped by an altar older than the tribes who feared it. May Eve and Hallowmass light fires here that no farm admits to setting. This is where the Dunwich horror was called, and where it was sent back — mostly.

Cited in The Dunwich Horror

Hooks

  • A university surveying team finds the stone ring one stone richer than the 1912 photographs.
  • Someone has been maintaining the altar. The nearest farm insists it's birds.

The sound of this place

Nearby

  • Dunwich · the round mountains

Town · the pike

Aylesbury

The last ordinary town before the hills — feed store, courthouse, a pike named after it, and a firm local policy of not continuing conversations about Dunwich. Investigators provision here; so does everything else.

Cited in The Dunwich Horror

Hooks

  • The feed store's biggest account pays in old coin and collects at night.
  • The courthouse fire of 1919 destroyed exactly one shelf of records.

The sound of this place

Nearby

  • Dunwich · Arkham, down the pike

Ruin · west of Arkham

The Blasted Heath

Five grey acres where nothing grows and no snow lies quite right, upstream of the new reservoir that will shortly put it — and its well — underwater. The surveyors work quickly there and decline overtime. Arkham will drink that water.

Cited in The Colour Out of Space

Hooks

  • A reservoir engineer's soil samples are normal by day and luminous by post.
  • The last Gardner relative refuses compensation — he wants the land watched, not paid for.

Nearby
