The Lovecraft reading order, three ways
Every story links to its full, free, public-domain text. Reading times assume an unhurried pace and a nervous glance at the window. The ▶ chips start the Arkham Wireless on that story's album — the record keeps playing while you read.
Which order should you use? If you have never read Lovecraft: the New Reader's order — it starts small, teaches you his tricks gently, and saves the novels for when you're hooked. If you're a completionist: chronological. If you're a Keeper prepping a scenario tonight: skip straight to the third table.
I · The New Reader's Order
Small doors first — the novels are earned, not assigned
| # | Story | Year | Time | Why here | While reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Dagon | 1919 | ~10 min | The whole Mythos in miniature: the sea, the thing, the survivor no one believes. If this lands, everything below will. | |
| 02 | Nyarlathotep | 1920 | ~5 min | A prose poem, and the best trailer ever cut for the end of the world. | |
| 03 | The Statement of Randolph Carter | 1920 | ~12 min | Two men, one tomb, one telephone wire down into the dark. The punchline is a single sentence you will not forget. | |
| 04 | The Music of Erich Zann | 1922 | ~15 min | The one about music — a mute violinist playing to hold something back. Lovecraft's own favorite of his early work. | |
| 05 | The Rats in the Walls | 1924 | ~35 min | The first fully-armed story: ancestry as horror, and a descent that goes exactly as far down as you fear it will. | |
| 06 | The Colour Out of Space | 1927 | ~50 min | His best story by his own account and many others'. Not gothic — wrong. Read it before bed at your peril. | |
| 07 | The Call of Cthulhu | 1928 | ~50 min | The keystone. Three nested accounts converging on one truth beneath the Pacific. The game is named after it for a reason. | |
| 08 | Pickman's Model | 1927 | ~25 min | A painter whose monsters are too good. Boston underworld horror with the best final line in the canon. | |
| 09 | The Dunwich Horror | 1929 | ~75 min | The most gameable story he wrote — investigators, a library, a monster, a counter-ritual. Call of Cthulhu in embryo. | |
| 10 | The Whisperer in Darkness | 1931 | ~110 min | Rural New England meets deep space. The last page performs a trick that still works a century on. | |
| 11 | The Shadow over Innsmouth | 1936 | ~110 min | The town, the look, the bus you should not have boarded. The ending re-reads the whole story behind you. | |
| 12 | The Haunter of the Dark | 1936 | ~40 min | His last major story: a steeple, a stone, and the dark between streetlamps. Pairs with Nyarlathotep above like a rhyme. | |
| 13 | At the Mountains of Madness | 1936 | ~3 hrs | The first novel-length work you should attempt — an expedition log that turns into deep time itself. | |
| 14 | The King in Yellow (Chambers) | 1895 | first 4 tales · ~2 hrs | The older cousin: read "The Repairer of Reputations" through "The Yellow Sign." The rest of the book is romance — stop while mad. | |
| 15 | The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath | 1943 | ~3 hrs | Saved for last because it is the reward: everything above, dreamed instead of feared. Bring the cats. |
II · The Chronological Order

III · The Keeper's Order
What to read before running what — and what to play at the table
| You're running… | Read first | At the table |
|---|---|---|
| Anything set in Innsmouth or on the coast | The Shadow over Innsmouth, then Dagon | |
| Rural or backwoods horror — farms, hollows, things in hills | The Dunwich Horror, then The Colour Out of Space and The Whisperer in Darkness | |
| An expedition — polar, desert, or anywhere the map goes blank | At the Mountains of Madness | |
| A Hastur / King in Yellow scenario — the play, the Sign, Carcosa | Chambers' first four tales: Repairer of Reputations through The Yellow Sign | |
| A Dreamlands campaign | The Statement of Randolph Carter, The Silver Key, then Kadath itself | |
